13 Jan Texas minors allowed to buy e-cigarettes
According to a December Reuters article, children under 18 are allowed to buy e-cigarettes in ten states, including Texas.
E-cigarettes are battery-powered tubes that heat a liquid chemical as it is inhaled into the lungs. The liquid contains nicotine, the addictive substance in tobacco and cigarettes. Using an e-cigarette is called “vaping.”
While e-cigarettes do not produce the smoke of traditional cigarettes, the nicotine in them is just as harmful to the development of the adolescent brain. E-cigarettes are not regulated by the FDA and are heavily advertised in print and television, which may be contributing to the increased use of e-cigarettes among teens and adolescents.
