05 Jan SAM (Smart Approaches to Marijuana) Releases Report on Legalization
Project SAM (Smart Approaches to Marijuana) released a report today on the legalization of recreational marijuana in Colorado and Washington. Researchers found that the number of children sent to the emergency room because of accidental marijuana ingestion doubled in one year. Teen possession arrests and rehab treatment admissions are up, as well as black market activity, disorderly conduct arrests, and marijuana-related burns and accidental ingestions. 13% of Washington marijuana edibles (candies, gummies, cookies, etc.) are found to contain mold, salmonella, or E.coli. Neither federal nor state authorities have made serious attempts to track youth use, mental health effects, advertising targeting youths, or other significant consequences of legalization.
